About Vidrodzhenia - Renaissance

Vidrodzhenia…
directly translates to Renaissance, a fervour that runs through the choir.

Vidrodzhenia rehearses at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre 31, Smedley Lane, Cheetham Hill, Manchester

Its members are descendants of Ukrainians who were displaced during the atrocities of World War II.

Unfortunately Ukrainian music, especially our church music, has suffered during the times of Soviet turmoil. Too often it has been classed as Russian music. It is true that the Imperial Russian Courts employed many Ukrainian singers. This only shows the appeal of Ukrainian music.

In the words of P. Macenko, an eminent musicologist, we must show the world the injustice done to Ukraine by years of misinformation. In time the term "Russian" will be disaffixed from among the titles. He goes on to say this heavy responsibility is weighed upon the shoulders of Ukrainians.

Vidrodzhenia has developed a wide ranging repertoire... Not has Vidrodzhenia been invited to sing folk concerts for ambassadors but Vidrodzhenia has sung full masses for bishops. Vidrodzhenia has sung christening, wedding and funeral masses. The Ukrainian sung mass is notorious for testing the mettle of any choir!

Under the musical directorship of Halyna Savchyn, Vidrodzhenia has taken it upon itself to produce the purest of Ukrainian sound, to which you dear reader will be the judge.
